Clear and accessible annual report design

Annual Report Design, Brisbane

What are annual reports

A clear, credible and accessible document

Annual report design is the process of turning an organisation's financial results, achievements and narrative for the year into a clear, credible and accessible document for boards, members, funders and stakeholders. A well-designed annual report does more than look professional, it makes complex information easy to understand, reinforces trust in the organisation, and meets governance and accessibility obligations.

In Australia, professionally designed annual reports typically range from $9,000 to $45,000, depending on page count, format (print, interactive PDF, accessible PDF, or microsite) and the volume of data visualisation involved.

Professionally designed annual report by Brisbane designer Myck

The numbers matter. So does how you present them.

Let’s turn your results, achievements and narrative into an annual report that communicates with clarity and confidence.

The annual report design

Why does annual report design matter?

Your annual report is one of the few documents your entire stakeholder community actually reads: board members, funders, regulators, members and the public. It's a clear statement of how well your organisation is run and how seriously you take accountability.

When it's clear and considered, it builds confidence. When it's cluttered, inconsistent or hard to navigate, it quietly undermines the very credibility you're trying to project. For councils, NFPs and member organisations especially, the report is the annual face of the organisation.

What value does a well-designed annual report create?

heart shake

Annual reporting deadline

When should you start your annual report design?

Annual reports are seasonal. Most Australian organisations report against a 30 June financial year and need to publish for AGMs and statutory deadlines in the following months, which makes August to November the busiest design window.

Annual report deadlines in Australia

Reporting deadlines depend on your organisation type and jurisdiction, but almost all follow the same rhythm: a 30 June financial year end, AGM season through October and November, and a busy design window from August to November.

look professional
Don't leave it too late

The single biggest mistake is starting too late: good design needs time for data to settle, copy to be finalised, and proofing to be done properly.

Companies (ASIC)

Public companies must hold their AGM within five months of year end (by around 30 November for a 30 June year); large proprietary companies must send financial reports to members within four months (by around 31 October).
ASIC — Company financial reports.

Charities (ACNC)

The Annual Information Statement is due within six months of year end. 31 December for charities that report to a standard financial year (1 July to 30 June) or 30 June for charities that report to a calendar year (1 January to 31 December).
ACNC — Annual Information Statement due dates.

Commonwealth entities (PGPA Act)

The annual report is due to the responsible Minister the earlier of the following: 21 days before the next annual general meeting after the end of the reporting period; or 4 months after the end of the reporting period for the company.
Approval, publication & presentation requirements.

State & territory government bodies

Each jurisdiction sets its own parliamentary tabling deadline. In Queensland, statutory bodies' reports must be tabled within three months of year end (by 30 September). NSW, Victoria, WA, SA, Tasmania, the ACT and NT each work to their own reporting frameworks and tabling calendars.

Great annual reports start early

Engaging a designer 6–10 weeks before your deadline, ideally before your content is fully signed off, produces a calmer process and a better result. If you're reading this in report season, now is the time to lock in capacity.

Frequently asked questions

The answers to your annual report questions

If you’re considering working with a MYCK, these are the questions people often ask to understand experience, process and what sets one designer apart from another.

How much does annual report design cost in Australia?
Professionally designed annual reports typically range from $9,000 to $45,000, depending on page count, the mix of formats (print, interactive PDF, accessible PDF, microsite) and how much data visualisation is required. Simpler NFP reports sit at the lower end; large, data-heavy corporate or government reports at the higher end.
How long does it take to design an annual report?

Allow 6 to 10 weeks from brief to print-ready files for most reports. Starting earlier, ideally before your content is fully signed off, produces a better result and avoids the rushed errors that come with last-minute deadlines.

When should we start our annual report design?

Engage a designer 6 to 10 weeks before your publication or AGM deadline. Because most Australian organisations report on a 30 June year, design capacity is tightest from August to November, so booking early in that window is wise.

Does our annual report need to be accessible?

For government agencies, councils, statutory bodies and many government-funded organisations, yes. Australian Government content is expected to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA, and inaccessible documents can breach the Disability Discrimination Act 1992. Even where it isn't mandated, an accessible report reaches more of your audience and reflects well on your organisation.

What's the difference between a designed report and one done in Word?

A designed report uses structure, hierarchy, data visualisation and a considered layout to make information genuinely clear and to reinforce your credibility. A Word document formats text while annual report design communicates. For a document your entire stakeholder community judges you by, the difference is significant.

Can you work from our existing template or brand guidelines?

Yes. I can design within your existing brand, refresh a tired template, or build a new reusable system from scratch. Whichever gives you the best result and the most value over future years.

Do you design reports for charities and not-for-profits?

Yes. It's an area I have extensive experience in. NFP, research and advocacy reports need to balance professionalism, clarity and integrity, often on tighter budgets, and I design with those realities in mind.

Can you deliver both print and digital versions?

Yes. Most reports are delivered as print-ready artwork plus an accessible PDF, with interactive PDF or microsite options available where you need a richer online version.

Are you a local Brisbane annual report designer, and do you work nationally?

Both. I'm Brisbane-based, so Queensland organisations get a local designer available in person, and I work with organisations right across Australia, delivering seamlessly by video and shared review tools. Either way you deal directly with me, one experienced designer accountable for your report, not a faceless studio.

Can you keep our report confidential?

Yes. Your financials and information stay private, and I'm happy to sign an NDA on request, standard practice for board and government material.

What if our content is running late?

It's common. Because I plan backwards from your deadline and work directly with you, we can prioritise the design that's ready and move quickly once content is signed off. The key is engaging early so the runway exists.

Do you use AI to create our report or its images?

No. I use modern tools to work efficiently, but your report's imagery, data and content are presented authentically. I never fabricate or alter images in ways that misrepresent reality. Your integrity matters too much.

Still have questions? Let's chat.

Annual report case study

Five years of annual reports for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Queensland

A spread showcasing the years achievements for Housing Queensland.
Housing Queenslands strategic plan outlined in their annual report

Since 2020/21 I've designed every one of the organisation's annual reports. Culturally considered, artwork-rich documents of up to 92 pages, delivered to tight AGM deadlines.

Every image is authentically retouched, never AI-generated. The reports are consistently praised by the board and have grown stronger year on year.

Starting to plan this year's annual report?

Let's have a 20-minute scoping conversation and I'll give you a clear timeline and fixed fee.

The more you can tell me: your deadline, rough page count, and what you're after, the more accurate the timeline and quote I can give you. Not sure yet? Just share what you know and I'll help you scope it.

Your information stays private. Happy to sign an NDA on request.
